The Crazy Horse Memorial, a mountain monument under construction on privately held land in the Black Hills, South Dakota, depicts the Oglala Lakota warrior Crazy Horse, riding a horse and pointing to his tribal land. Commissioned by Henry Standing Bear, a Lakota elder, it’s being sculpted by Korczak Ziolkowski. The Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit organization, operates it. Construction began in 1948 and is ongoing.
Mount Rushmore:
Mount Rushmore, a sculpture of four American presidents, stands tall from left to right: George Washington, the first President of the United States and the inaugural president carved onto the mountain; Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence and the driving force behind the Louisiana Purchase (1803); Theodore Roosevelt, the champion of the Square Deal; and Abraham Lincoln, whose leadership during the Civil War united America and led to the abolition of slavery.
Grand Tetons, WY. This time we took an alternate road.
